Tourney Champs! Broncos Win Five-Set Thriller

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – For the first time in program history, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team captured the CCAA Volleyball Tournament title, thanks to a thrilling, nailbiting five-set victory (25-16, 25-20, 15-25, 21-25, 15-10) over Sonoma State on Saturday at The Sports Center in San Marcos.

Click HERE to watch the postgame press conference with head coach Traci Dahl, Erin McFarland, Daisy Duke, Kaitlan Tucker, Caitie Mueller and Dionne Zhao.

The 23rd-ranked Broncos, who were seeded No. 3 in the tournament, rise to 23-5 and earn the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament, which will begin Thursday with the West Regional at a site to be determined. CPP will find out where it will be going and who it will be playing when the NCAA Selection Show airs live on NCAA.com Sunday at 7:30 pm.

The Seawolves, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, falls to 21-7 overall and, despite the loss, Sonoma State is expected to earn an at-large bid into the West Regional as well.

The Broncos came out on fire in the opening set, hitting .407, much thanks to Daisy Duke's seven kills in nine attacks (.778 hitting percentage). It lifted CPP to an easy 25-16 win in the first set.  The second set was much of the same, en route to a 25-20 win and a 2-0 match lead.

However, the Seawolves made things interesting with convincing wins in the third and fourth sets (25-15 and 25-21 respectively) to force a deciding fifth set.

In the tiebreaker, the teams battled through eight ties and five lead changes. The last tie came at 9-9 before Novak scored a kill and Sonoma erred on an attack to give Pomona the 11-9 lead, one they would not relinquish. CPP scored the final four points of the match to capture the tournament trophy.

Duke ended the night with 15 kills, but was held to just .128 on offense. Novak chipped in with 14 kills on a .270 clip. Caitie Mueller handed out 43 assists and had three service aces. Defensively, Avery Percival recorded 20 digs and both Kaitlan Tucker and Novak assisted on four blocks.

Sonoma held the statistical advantage in most categories, including hitting percentage (.240-.203), assists (58-48), digs (61-60) and team blocks (12-6). Kiana Richardson led all players with 21 kills and Jaden Krist had 17 to lead the Seawolves on Saturday.

Five Broncos were named to the CCAA Volleyball All-Tournament Team – Daisy Duke was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, and Madison Novak, Avery Percival, Kaitlan Tucker and Caitie Mueller earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

With the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, Cal Poly Pomona will be making its 18th appearance all-time. Tune into the NCAA Division II Volleyball Selection Show live on NCAA.com Sunday at 7:30 pm to find out the location and opponent for next weekend's West Regional.
