BELLINGHAM, Wash. – In one of the most closely-contested matches of the season, the No. 20-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team edged No. 16 Cal State San Bernardino in a five-set nailbiter (21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 15-7), to open the 2022 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament at Carver Gymnasium on the campus of Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash.
The fourth-seeded Broncos (24-5) advance to Friday's regional semifinal at 5:00 pm Pacific Time against eight-seed Chaminade, which later upset top-seeded Alaska Anchorage in five sets. The five-seed Coyotes (20-7), who has now appeared in 22 straight NCAA Tournaments, suffered their first regional quarterfinal loss ever.

The Broncos and Coyotes fought through 39 ties and 16 lead changes in the two-hour, 35-minute thriller that saw CPP win the first, third and fifth sets, and CSUSB the second and fourth sets.
CCAA Player of the Year
Daisy Duke went for 21 kills on 53 attempts with four errors for a .321 hitting percentage, while
Madison Novak chipped in with 16 kills on the other side with CCAA Newcomer of the Year
Caitie Mueller setting the offense for 42 assists to go over 1,000 assists for the season. Defensively,
Samantha Campion scored a career-high 34 digs,
Avery Percival added 24 digs and Mueller tallied 23 digs as the Broncos had a season-high 114 digs in the match.
Kaitlan Tucker scored eight blocks and
Erin McFarland had five blocks.
Jenna O'Shea tied a match-high with three service aces.
As a team, the Broncos hit .215 while holding the Coyotes to just .153 on offense.
Jenna Patton led CSUSB with 16 kills and Makena Overbey had 27 digs.
Cal Poly Pomona reaches the regional semifinal for just the third time in program history in the NCAA's current playoff format, which was instituted in 1998. The Broncos have never faced Chaminade in the NCAA postseason.

- Head coach Traci Dahl moves to 55-26 in her fourth year (third season) at Cal Poly Pomona, including 47-10 the last two seasons.
- The 114 digs by the Broncos today is a season-high, and is the most in a single-match by CPP since Nov. 3, 2017 when the Broncos set a program-record with 129 digs.
- Caitie Mueller eclipsed the 1,000-assist mark of the season today; she is the fourth CPP volleyball student-athlete to record 1,000+ assists in a season since 2008 when the NCAA instituted its current 25-point scoring format.
- Daisy Duke has a career-best 430 kills this season, a new single-season record in the current 25-point format.
- Kaitlan Tucker has recorded 131 total blocks this season, which is the second-most in program history since 2008 when the scoring format went to its current 25-point format.
- Winning the last two matches against Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona moves to 28-46 all-time against the Coyotes.
- The win is also the first for CPP over CSUSB in the NCAA Tournament (entered 0-2).
- The Broncos have now played in 18 NCAA Tournaments in program history, and improves to 8-18 in such games, including 3-4 in the West Region quarterfinal round.
- Ranked in the Top 25 this week at No. 20, CPP is now 285-167 as a nationally-ranked team since 1986.
- The Broncos improve to 55-107 when both CPP and its opponent is ranked in the AVCA Division II Top 25 poll (CSUSB was ranked 16th this week).
- As a program, CPP is now 776-534 all-time, including 198-136 in neutral-site matches since the program's inception in 1980.
- CPP is now 132-107 in five-set matches all-time, including 4-1 this season.
- The Broncos are also 4-0 this season when Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance Christie Joines and Assistant Athletics Director for Communications Tyler Lobe make effective in-match seat selection adjustments.
