Payne, Broncos Demolish Coyotes In CCAA Opener

POMONA – Donja Payne led all players with 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team jumped out to a 19-0 lead early and never looked back, crusing to a 67-38 victory over visiting Cal State San Bernardino Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.

With the victory, the Broncos improved to 4-1 overall and opened the CCAA season at 1-0. The win also gave head coach Danelle Bishop her 350th victory has a head coach at the NCAA Division II level. The Coyotes fell to 4-2 (0-1 CCAA).

It was all Broncos early and often as CPP scored the first 19 points of the game before the Coyotes' Mia Dufresne put two points on the scoreboard with a layup at the 3:16 mark of the first quarter. It would be the only bucket by CSUSB in the opening quarter as the frame ended with CPP holding a 26-2 lead.

The lead jumped to 26 early in the second half (30-4) before earning the eventual 29-point win, the largest margin of victory since an 85-56 win over Chico State on Dec. 29, 2018.

Payne scored 20 points on 9 of 15 shooting while Ally Bates added 14 points with seven rebounds and six assists. Chynna Cochran came off the bench to score 13 points for the hosts. As a team, CPP was 28 of 68 from the floor (41.2 percent).

Cal State San Bernardino was held to just 29.4 percent on 15 of 51 shooting. Samantha Henley and Olivia Lee led the Coyotes with eight points each.

Cal Poly Pomona will head to the Bay Area next week for two games, beginning with a Thursday night contest at Cal State Monterey Bay. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
