Broncos Hold Off Otters Late; Rise To 5-1 This Season

SEASIDE, Calif. – Ally Bates scored a team-high 17 points and Chynna Cochran chipped in with 14 as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team enjoyed the most efficient shooting performance of the season in Thursday's 67-61 victory over host Cal State Monterey Bay at the Otter Sports Center in Seaside.
 
The Broncos improve to 5-1 this season and remain perfect in CCAA play at 2-0. The Otters fall to 3-3 (0-2 CCAA).
 
CPP led for 38 of the 40 minutes and jumped out to its largest lead of 14 points at 35-21 with 3:24 left to play in the second quarter. CSUMB did close the gap to three points at 57-54 at the 8:27 mark of the fourth period, but the Broncos got a three-pointer from Breanne Ha and a made jumper by Donja Payne to extend the lead back to eight points and the Otters could never get any closer than six points the rest of the way.
 
Bates, Cochran and Kalaya Buggs all scored in double figures; Buggs dropped in 10 points in 24 minutes of action before fouling out. Payne led all players with 10 rebounds and Alicia Jones handed out six assists.
 
As a team, the Broncos connected on a season-high 52.2 percent of their shots (24 of 46) and was near perfect from the line at 93.3 percent (14 of 15). CPP led in most statistical categories, including rebounds (27-26), assists (14-13), bench points (24-11), blocks (4-0), fastbreak points (12-7) and points in the paint (32-22).
 
CSUMB was led by the 26 points of Lauryn Pointer, who shot 7 of 15 from the floor (3 of 8 from three-point range) and was a perfect 9 for 9 from the line.
 
Cal Poly Pomona wraps up its brief two-game road trip Saturday against San Francisco State at 1:00 pm in San Francisco.

  • Head coach Danelle Bishop moves to 351-197 in her 19th season as a head coach, including 213-112 in 12 seasons at Cal Poly Pomona.
