Defense Shines In 3-0 Sweep Of SF State

POMONA – The 23rd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team used stifling defense Friday night to defeat visiting San Francisco State in three sets (25-15, 26-24, 25-19) at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
 
The Broncos rise to 19-5 overall and 13-4 in the CCAA. The Gators fall to 14-10 (10-7 CCAA).
 
Kaitlan Tucker led the effort on both sides of the net, scoring a team-high eight kills and blocking nine attacks en route to 13.0 points. She hit .471, not committing an error in 17 attacks. Daisy Duke and Samantha Campion each tagged seven kills while Caitie Mueller had five kills and handed out just 17 assists. In fact, the 32 kills by the Broncos were a season-low.
 
Meanwhile, Avery Percival (17 digs), Campion (15 digs) and Mackenzie Sullivan (14 digs) to go along with the 14.0 team blocks; Tucker and Erin McFarland accounted for 8.5 of the 14.0 rejections at the net.
 
As a team, the Broncos hit .215 while holding the Gators to an even .100.
 
SF State was led by the 14 kills from Alhana Velasquez.
 
Cal Poly Pomona will wrap up the regular season Saturday afternoon, hosting Cal State Monterey Bay for a 2:00 pm first serve from Kellogg Arena. The Broncos will also honor their five seniors – Mackenzie Sullivan, Dionne Zhao, Kacy Bolding, Ruki Kennedy, and Erin McFarland – just prior to the match.

  • Head coach Traci Dahl moves to 50-26 in her fourth year (third season) at Cal Poly Pomona, including 42-10 the last two seasons.
  • It is the eighth time in program history that the Broncos have opened their season with an 19-5 record or better through the first 24 matches.
  • The Broncos have now won 13 straight matches against San Francisco State, rising to 44-9 all-time against the Gators.
  • Daisy Duke has 339 kills this season, a new personal-best for a single-season, increasing her career total to 816; her career kills per set average of 3.29 is currently the third-most all-time in program history.
  • Ranked in the Top 25 this week at No. 23, CPP is now 280-167 as a nationally-ranked team since 1986.
  • As a program, CPP is now 771-534 all-time, including 296-160 in home matches and 381-299 in conference play since the program's inception in 1980.
  • CPP is now 318-205 in three-set matches all-time.
