SAN FRANCISCO – Donja Payne tied the program record with 23 rebounds and added 20 points as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team continued its winning ways, cruising past San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon, 62-48, at The Swamp in San Francisco.
The Broncos (6-1, 3-0 CCAA) have won their first three CCAA games of the season while the Gators fell to 4-4 (1-2 CCAA).
Payne single-handedly dominated SFSU, tying her season-high in points while becoming the first CPP women's basketball player since 2004 to record 20+ points and 20+ rebounds in the same game. In 35 minutes of action, she was 6 of 11 shooting and 8 for 10 from the free throw line, grabbing 17 defensive rebounds and six rebounds off the offensive glass, along with one assist and one steal in the contest.
Ally Bates chipped in with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the victory, and
Alicia Jones turned in a 10-point performance.
Kalaya Buggs nearly tallied a double-double herself, scoring nine points and corralling eight rebounds.
The Broncos led from start to finish on Saturday, scoring the game's first 13 points and jumping out to a 17-4 lead after one quarter of play. The Gators rallied to pull within six points at 26-20 with 1:46 left before the intermission, but that's as close as they would get the rest of the way.
CPP crushed SFSU in the key, outrebounding the hosts 52-26 and outscoring them in the paint 32-14, including 17-3 in second-chance points.
Only one Gator scored in double-digits; Mya Blake came off the bench to deliver 22 points on 8 of 19 from the floor (5 of 13 from 3-point range) in 34 minutes of work.
Cal Poly Pomona will return home Thursday to host Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:30 pm. It will also feature a special halftime performance by The ZOOperstars! Click
