Cal Poly Pomona Downed at Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES - Cal Poly Pomona trailed by 13 points at halftime after allowing a late run, and was unable to make up the difference in the second half and fell to Cal State LA, 90-69, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball action Thursday night at University Gym.

With the result, CPP drops to 6-13 overall and 5-10 in the CCAA. Cal State LA improves to 9-10 overall and 8-6 in league play. The area and conference rivals thus split their regular-season series, as the Broncos had come out on top in the first meeting, 76-69 in Pomona on Jan. 22.

Monica Todd's two free throws with 7:02 to go in the first got the Broncos on the board, down 4-2. The senior forward actually scored CPP's first six points, knotting the score at 6-6 with two more makes from the stripe. Cal State LA led 22-17 after 10 minutes.

The Golden Eagles extended their advantage to as many as 11 points on a couple of occasions during the second quarter, at 32-21 and again at 34-23, before the Broncos were able to cut into their deficit a little bit. They made it a four-point game at 36-32 following two more makes from the line by Todd and a Todd-assisted Ciara James bucket The home side finished the period on a flurry, however, scoring 11 of the final 13 points to take its biggest lead to that point, 47-34, into the locker room. Two of their three triples during that stretch over the last couple of minutes came from Nicole Flennaugh, to give her 10 points at the break.

The second half began with an Ally Bates three-pointer, but by the third-quarter media timeout, the hosts had built up a 17-point cushion at 57-39. Coming out of that stoppage, a Yesenia Smith triple made it a 20-point game, 59-39. The score after three quarters stood at 68-46. Though the fourth began with a Jayda Villareal three-pointer, the Golden Eagles responded and maintained at least a 20-point lead over the duration.

Chynna Cochran scored a season- and team-high 15 points off the bench, reaching double digits for the fourth time as a first-year transfer. Todd had 12 points, three rebounds, and team bests of three assists and three steals. Bates added 10 points. James contributed six points, a team-high five rebounds, a game-best three blocks, and a steal. Ayah League collected season highs of seven points and two assists.

Smith wound up with a game-high 23 points. Anai Washington was a second Golden Eagle with a 20-point effort, notching 13 by halftime en route to 20 on the night. Neither player started the game. Flennaugh backed them up with 13 points. Jada Johnson posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead all players. Alyssa Fisher handed out a game-high nine assists, setting up all three triples during that key stretch late in the first half, to go with a game-best four steals. Lily Buggs had eight points. Cal State LA shot 53.8 percent (35-65) and never trailed.

Cal Poly Pomona heads south to conclude this season-long four-game road stretch at league-leading Cal State San Marcos (16-2, 14-1 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 12. The matinee at The Sports Center tips off at 1 p.m. There will be no men's game to follow, as that tilt was canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the CSUSM men's program. The Cougar women won their 12th straight contest Thursday at home over Cal State San Bernardino, and sit just outside the national rankings.
