SAN MARCOS, Calif. - A 12-0 run to end the first half turned a six-point lead into a six-point deficit as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team fell at first-place Cal State San Marcos, 51-42, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest at The Sports Center on Saturday.
With the result, CPP drops to 6-14 overall and 5-11 in the CCAA. A program-record 13th consecutive victory moves Cal State San Marcos to 17-2 overall and 15-1 in league play.
The Cougars, also the preseason conference favorites after winning a share of the most recent regular-season banner for the first time in school history in 2019-20, had only once before on the year, scored less than 69 points, and that was in their last loss, 64-56 at home to second-place Cal State East Bay back on Dec. 4. CSUSM averages a league-best 74.1 points per game. The Broncos held the Cougars to 37.7 percent (20-53) shooting from the field, tied for their second-lowest of the campaign.
Ally Bates scored the first three points of the game and CPP's initial five, before fellow senior
Monica Todd's driving layup broke a 7-7 tie just past the midway point of the opening period. Coming out of that break, a
Chynna Cochran free throw and
Jayda Villareal jumper extended the Bronco run out to 7-0 and their lead to 12-7. The Cougars responded with two baskets in a row from reigning national and conference Player of the Week Jordan Vasquez.
Back-to-back three-pointers by
Breanne Ha and Bates, assisted by Bates and Villareal, respectively, ended the quarter with CPP up 18-11. A game-high eight of those points came from Bates.
Vasquez scored twice more around a Cochran bucket to begin the second. A second Ha three-pointer, again set up by Bates, gave the visitors a 25-19 lead before CSUSM ended the quarter on a 12-0 run.
Sydney Buckley's three-point play preceded consecutive triples from Akayla Hackson for her first points of the afternoon, giving the Cougars a 28-25 advantage with 3:02 left in the half. The latter one was assisted by Vasquez after rebounding her own miss. Kelsey Forrester's three-pointer for her first points, made it 31-25 at the interval. CPP was held scoreless for the last 6:38 after the Ha jumper.
Early in the third, a Villareal triple was answered a minute later by a third hit from distance by Hackson. That was the Broncos' final field goal of the period, at 8:35, and CPP did not score again after Todd split free throws with 7:12 to go. CSUSM scored the next six points on a Vasquez bucket, two Hackson free throws, and a Hackson fast-break layup after her own steal with under 20 seconds remaining. CPP actually held the hosts without a point for 5:13 between those Jackson scores. The run still gave CSUSM its first double-digit cushion, however, at 42-31, going to the fourth.
Like they did the first quarter, the Broncos won that fourth, outscoring the Cougars, 11-9. They were thus still hanging around as late as 46-40 thanks to a 9-2 run, before a second Forrester triple really made things tough with under four minutes to go. The only offense over the remainder was a late Todd layup to answer two Hackson free throws.
Bates finished with 13 points to lead the Broncos. She added a game-high four assists and five rebounds.
Ciara James grabbed 14 boards to share the game high, and had the only two blocked shots of the contest. Todd's basket with 10 seconds left to close out the game gave her 11 points, extending her streak of double-figure scoring efforts to nine.
Villareal and Ha had seven and six points, respectively, while combining for 10 rebounds. Villareal played the entire 40 minutes, and eclipsed the 500-point milestone for her college career, now with 501. Cochran contributed five points, five boards, one assist and a steal off the bench.
CPP out-rebounded CSUSM, 45-39, with its 20 on the offensive glass the most by a Cougar opponent this year. The Broncos reached the 20 mark for the sixth time. They shot just 25.4 percent (16-63).
Hackson, the league's leading scorer and a CCAA Player of the Year candidate, collected a game-high 17 points after a slow start, to go along with three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Vasquez posted her fourth straight double-double and eighth of the season with 16 points and 14 boards. The first-year transfer shot 8-of-13 from the field and handed out three assists. Sydney Buckley had nine points, four rebounds and three assists.
