POMONA - Cal Poly Pomona scored 14 seconds in and led for all but 44 ticks, grabbing a 15-point advantage by halftime en route to a 68-57 triumph over Cal Poly Humboldt in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball action Thursday night at Kellogg Arena.
With the win, CPP improved to 7-14 overall and 6-11 in the CCAA. Cal Poly Humboldt, just recently renamed from Humboldt State late last month, fell to 7-13 overall and 6-10 in league play. The Broncos had outlasted the Lumberjacks in this season's first meeting, 89-80 in double overtime, in Arcata on Jan. 15.
Cal Poly Pomona began the day in 10th place and as one of eight teams vying for the remaining four entries into the CCAA Tournament next month in the Lumbjeracks' home arena in Arcata. The result in Thursday's must-win affair keeps the Broncos alive, but they likely need to sweep their remaining three contests and get help elsewhere.
A
Ciara James jumper accounted for that initial early score to get CPP going. Just over two minutes later, a pair of
Breanne Ha steals led to back-to-back three-point connections by
Jayda Villareal and
Ally Bates, forcing Cal Poly Humboldt into the night's first timeout.
Madison Parry finally got the visitors on the board with a layup at the 6:54 mark, and a second straight basket by her, both assisted by Ashley Peralta, halved the deficit at 8-4. A Peralta steal preceded a third basket in succession by Parry, who then leveled matters at 8-8.
Monica Todd got her hands on a steal and scored on the other end to regain a slim 10-8 edge for the hosts heading into the final three minutes of the opening period.
Sydney Fedinec, a redshirt freshman who had set up Todd on the prior possession, then got the ball back after
Rebecca Islas rebounded her three-point miss, and laid it in for 12-8. Moments later, roles were reversed as Islas made it six straight points for CPP. Two Bates baskets around a second Todd over the final 25 seconds suddenly made it a 10-0 run and 18-8 lead for the Broncos after one.
CPP scored 12 of its 18 points in that first period off seven Lumberjack turnovers.
Just past the midway point of the second period, a Ha three off another turnover gave the Broncos their largest lead to that point, at 25-13. A Todd bucket and second Villareal triple ended the half and gave CPP a 32-17 cushion at the interval. The home side forced 11 turnovers while committing just four of its own, scoring 17 points off those mistakes.
Cal Poly Pomona came right out of the locker room and extended that run to 11-0 through a Todd field goal, Ha three and James free throw, for a 21-point bulge of 38-17 at the media timeout with 6:43 to go. The Broncos maintained a 48-31 advantage through three quarters of play.
Cal Poly Humboldt had several opportunities at least just to get its deficit back down into single digits by late in the fourth, but never truly threatened as CPP came away with the comfortable win.
Bates and Todd each had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the way for Cal Poly Pomona. Todd added two assists and a game- and season-high six steals. Her points haul pushed the senior up over 600 for her three-year Bronco career, now with 601. Ha registered eight points, four boards and two steals. Villareal contributed six points on a pair of threes, while James had seven points and seven rebounds..
Off the bench, Islas provided six points, four rebounds and three assists.
Ayah League posted season highs of eight points and three assists. Fedinec dished out a season- and team-high four helpers.
Parry posted her eighth double-double with a season-high 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead all players, alongside one steal and a block. The second-year freshman reached the 20-point mark for the third time. Citlaly Davalos backed her with 15 points, 13 of them coming in the fourth largely from a trio of threes. Peralta had nine points, a game-high eight assists, four steals and three boards.
