CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona opened the 2022 outdoor track and field season Saturday at the Rossi Relays, taking second as a team with 127 points.
Ryan Fields won the CPP-dominated 110-meter hurdles as four Broncos placed in the top-five of the event. Fields crossed the finish line in 14.19 seconds, which ranks fourth all-time.
Alessio Sommacal took third in 14.44 (tied for ninth all-time) seconds and
Nnamdi Onwaeze and
Gabriel Zapata followed in fourth and fifth with respective times of 14.55 seconds and 14.99 seconds.
Vincent Sarino capped the event with a first-place finish in the 3000-meter race, the final race of the night. He beat out his competition by almost three seconds, clocking in at 8:18.58.
Leandro Candray also finished in the top 10, taking ninth with a time of 8:26.14.
CPP saw two Broncos finish in the top-five of the shot put with Alejandro Sandoval-Guzman taking second and
Aaron May grabbing fourth place. Sandoval-Guzman threw 15.08 meters on his first try, while May also hurled his best throw on his first attempt (14.90m).
May also led a trio of Broncos in the top-five of the discus throw, taking second with a hurl of 49.77 meters on his fourth and final attempt. Dominique Navarrette finished fourth (49.49m), while Sandoval-Guzman took fifth (49.38m).
The 4x100 relay team of
Bryce Bushnell,
Joshua Johnson, Sommacal, and
Deandre Smith took second in a time of 41.74 seconds.
Deandre Smith took second in the long jump with a jump of 6.57 meters, while
Kailen Smith finished second in the high jump with a mark of 2.03 meters, clearing the height on his first attempt.
Johnson took second in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 10.71 seconds, which was less than .2 seconds behind first place. Bushnell also placed in the top-10 with a time of 11.12 seconds.
CPP had three teams race in the 4x400 event with the team of Fields, Johnson,
Jalen Jenkins and
Kaelin Moore taking second with a time of 3:20.15.
Brandon Cruz Jr., Bushnell, Onwaeze, and
Camden Patterson took third in 3:24.93, while Zapata,
Jaelen Craft,
Kevin Mlynek, and
Derek Porter took fourth with a time of 3:25.25.
Porter took eighth in the 400m hurdles, posting a time of 58.63 seconds.
Isaiah Galloway finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.12 meters.
The Broncos continue the season at the Beach Opener, hosted by Long Beach State, on Saturday, March 5.
