Zapata, Other Broncos Post Multiple Wins In Riverside, Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. -- Cal Poly Pomona saw multiple Broncos pick up wins on the week, both in Irvine on Saturday and in Riverside on Thursday and Friday.

Gabriel Zapata got the weekend started by winning the decathlon at the UC Riverside Spring Classic, with a score of 6,355 points. He posted first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (11.03 seconds), high jump (1.81 meters), 400-meter run (49.22 seconds), and 110m hurdles (14.75 seconds) to win the multi event.

Dom Navarrette-Perez won the discus, posting a throw of 50.24 meters, which sits ninth all-time in the CPP record book. He was the only athlete to pass the 50-meter mark, doing so on two of his attempts. Khai Redd took third with a throw of 45.48 meters, while Thomas Tuff placed seventh with a mark of 43.20 meters.
 
Jalen Jenkins picked up a win in the 400-meter race, clocking in at 49.61 seconds.
 
Matteo Madrassi won the pole vault, clearing 4.70 meters to take first. Dylan Chung and Aaron Rodriguez tied for fourth, both hitting 4.25 meters.
 
Kailen Smith took third in the high jump with a mark of 1.96 meters, while Deandre Smith grabbed seventh in the long jump with a mark of 6.69 meters. Isaiah Galloway also finished in the top-10 of the long jump with a 6.41-meter jump. Galloway also took third in the triple jump, clearing 13.69 meters.
 
Gerardo Flores led five Broncos in the shot put, taking second overall. On his third attempt, Flores heaved the rock 15.59 meters. Tuff took fourth with a throw of 14.58 meters, followed by Navarrette in fifth (14.54 meters) and Alex Problosky in sixth (14.43 meters). Redd rounded out the quintet in ninth place with a throw of 13.66 meters.
 
Derek Porter took fourth in the 110-meter hurdle prelims with a time of 15.49 seconds and shaved almost .2 seconds off his time to finish in 15.27 seconds in the finals.
 
The Broncos continue the season at the SF State Distance Carnival next week.
