ALLENDALE, Mich. --
Cal Poly Pomona's Matteo Madrassi secured a seventh-place finish and All-America honors in the pole vault, highlighting the first day of the 2022 NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.

Ryan Fields also took to the track Thursday for the preliminary races of the 400-meter Hurdles event, but finished 11th overall with a time of 52.02 and did not qualify for the final race on Saturday.

Madrassi got off to a quick start in the pole vault, launching over the bar at 4.85 meters and at 5.00 meters on his first attempts.  It took until his last of three attempts to get over the 5.10 meter bar and the 5.20 meter bar, which clinched an All-America award for earning a Top 8 finish.  He missed on all three attempts to get over the 5.30 meter bar, but his efforts on the 5.20 meter bar proved to be a new personal-record and catapulted himself to No. 2 in CPP's All-Time Top 10 Record Book in the pole vault.

With his All-America finish, Madrassi becomes the eighth Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field student-athlete to earn All-America honors in the pole vault.

Fields, meanwhile, is set to earn Second Team All-America honors for a Top 12 finish in the 400-meter Hurdles despite not advancing to Saturday's final.  Fields will have one more chance to qualify for a final race on Saturday as he will take part in the prelims of the 110-meter Hurdles on Friday at 3:35 pm Pacific Time alongside teammate Alessio Sommacal.
