ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Cal Poly Pomona's
Ryan Fields won his heat in the 110-meter Hurdles prelims with a time of 14.50, automatically qualifying him for the final race, highlighting day two of the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships hosted by Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.
Though Fields ran the 11th-best time among the 17 competitors in the event, he won his heat, and the Top 2 finishers from each of the three heats automatically advance to Saturday's final. Fields, running in a chaotic second heat, was one of only three hurdlers to not trip over hurdles, while three others spilled to the track mid-race.
After a slight delay,
Alessio Sommacal ran the third and final heat in the 110-meter Hurdles. He was the last in his heat to finish, crossing the line in 14.48. Though it was faster than Fields' time, Sommacal did not advance to the final race as he placed 12th overall. Sommacal's finish does secure a Second Team All-America honor as earning a Top 12 finish in the event.
For Fields, the final race of the 110-meter Hurdles will take place Saturday at 11:45 am Pacific Time.
