No. 5 Broncos Shutout the Griffins in Home Opener

POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona hosted the Westminster Griffins from Salt Lake City, Utah for their home opener. The Broncos took full advantage of two penalty kicks to win the game, 2-0.

With the second victory this week, CPP stands with an overall record of 2-0-0.

It was midfielder Mike Moser who hit both penalty kicks, the first drawn from a handball called on Westminster in the 53rd minute, and the second from a foul drawn by forward Paul Roger Henschke in the 60th minute.

The Broncos defense once again kept their opponent out of the net. Defenders Pele Martinez, Cesar Ruvalcaba, and Jasper Winslow kept Westminster to a mere two shots on the game earning their second shutout of the week.

CPP on the other hand took 13 shots on the game with seven on goal. Leading the Broncos in shots was midfielder Woody Angell who took three shots and one shot on goal. Both Henschke and forward Kevin Hernandez went for two shots and one shot on goal.

"Tonight the guys were excellent!" said coach Matt O'Sullivan. "I really liked how we defended, we were tight and played physical. Offensively we played nice but we need to be ruthless earlier. It has hurt us in the past when we let teams hang around."

Coach O'Sullivan continued, "The second half we played with a higher tempo and finished the job. We look forward to the next challenge. Each game is different and we need to keep problem solving both with and without the ball."

The Broncos next match is on Thursday, September 1st at 7:00 pm at Kellogg Stadium against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers.

Bronco Bits: Cal Poly Pomona fourth-year head coach O'Sullivan moved to 27-10-7 in his coaching career ... Broncos all-time record now stands at 317-349-82 since their first season in 1983.
