Last Second Mines Goal Leads to First Tie for the Broncos

POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona hosted the Colorado School of Mines as they played in the first double-header of the season. Heading into the match, the Broncos held a record of 2-0 and the Orediggers traveled to Kellogg Stadium with an overall record of 1-1. CPP held the lead 2-1, until the Mines scored a last second goal to tie the game, 2-2.

This draw puts the Broncos at an overall record of 2-0-1.

CPP was first on the scoreboard in the 40th minute when midfielder Mads Frederiksen pushed the ball up field and found midfielder Mike Moser for a goal. In the 53rd minute, the Orediggers were awarded a penalty kick that was scored by Tristan Semelsberger to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 87th minute midfielder Mikey Sedano hit a header into the goal off the throw in by midfielder Melvyn Perez Cortez to take the lead. The Broncos were up 2-1, with only a few minutes remaining. The Orediggers hit a goal with two seconds on the clock to close the game in a 2-2 tie.

Leading the Broncos in shots was forward Cris Prieto who took four shots with three shots on goal. Forward Paul Roger Henschke also took four shots and had two shots on goal. Defender Thomas Guei attempted three shots and Moser collected two shots on the game.

"At moments we were terrific and then we missed some great chances" said coach Matt O'Sullivan. "It's the ups and downs of college soccer. At moments we were a little naive. We play these quality regional teams so we can be tested and get better, and the Mines is a very hard-working quality team."

Coach O'Sullivan continued, "We just need to move on quickly and understand each game is different. We have a big game on Saturday against a very good team and we must bounce back and be ready."

The Broncos next game is this Saturday, September 3rd at 7:00 pm when they take on Biola University on Kellogg Stadium.

Bronco Bits: Cal Poly Pomona fourth-year head coach O'Sullivan moved to 27-10-8 in his coaching career ... Midfielder Sedano scored his first goal against the Mines … The Broncos still lead the overall series against the Mines, 3-1-1.
