COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Audrey Brown recorded her second consecutive shutout Sunday as the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie with No. 22 University of Colorado Colorado Springs at Mountain Lion Stadium.
The scoreless deadlock moves the Broncos to 1-3-1 on the season, as the nationally-ranked Mountain Lions go to 3-1-3.
"I'm really proud of our girls' fight today against a nationally-ranked program," said head coach
Jay Mason. "Sunday matches are always a great test of our groups character. They played for each other and earned a good result against a very organized and dynamic team in UCCS."
Both teams would only combine for five shots in the opening 45 minutes, three coming off the feet of Bronco players. The intensity exploded in the second half as the squads would attempt 19 shots with an 11-8 advantage by the hosts. It got even more interesting in the final eight minutes as the teams ran up and down the field to attempt three shots each, but Brown and UCCS goalkeeper Alexis Walker held strong to keep the ball from touching nylon through the final whistle. In the end, the Mountain Lions held a 13-11 edge in shots (5-4 on goal), and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks, but no goals to show for it. Brown came up with five stops, Walker with four.
Allyssa Larkin,
Bridget Carbonneau and
Haley Hong each attempted two shots for CPP; both of Carbonneau's shots came on goal. Jael Larson and Sydney Lasater each took three shots for UCCS.
"Getting two shutouts on the road, in the rain, and altitude, shows the resilience and drive this group has to succeed this year," Mason added.
Cal Poly Pomona will return home Saturday, playing host to Azusa Pacific in a 7:00 pm kickoff at Kellogg Stadium for the Broncos' final non-conference match of the season. CPP will also honor its 2022 seniors in a special pre-game ceremony.
