POMONA – Despite getting off to a slow start, the 25
th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team, rallied for a 3-1 victory (14-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20) over visiting Azusa Pacific Tuesday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
It is the Broncos' eighth consecutive victory, rising to 8-1 overall. The Cougars fell to 4-6.
The opening frame was all APU, which jumped out to a large lead early, one that CPP could not come back from. The Cougars hit .400 as a team in the set while holding the Broncos to an characteristic .062 clip, stunning the CPP faithful with a convincing 25-14 win to take the early match lead.
The momentum would begin to shift in the Broncos' favor in the second set and the Cougars couldn't find the answers. CPP hit .371 over the final three sets while APU was held to just .153 in the same span. With that, the Broncos earned wins of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-20 for the come-from-behind victory.
Daisy Duke led the offense with 17 kills and a .395 hitting percentage while
Samantha Campion recorded 14 kills, as the duo combined for 31 of the team's 55 kills on the night.
Caitie Mueller handed out 48 assists and assisted on five blocks at the net.
Mackenzie Sullivan recorded a match-high 20 digs, while Campion added 17 digs and
Avery Percival chipped in with 12 digs.
Kaitlan Tucker was dominant at the net, rejecting 10 attacks, one of which was of the solo variety. The team ended with a .292 hitting percentage and 15.0 team blocks.
Annaka Jorgenson led Azusa Pacific with 16 kills and Kararina Radisic chipped in with 13 as the Cougars ended the night with a .193 clip.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to conference play Friday when it hosts Cal Poly Humboldt at 5:00 pm.
