No. 25 Broncos Beat Sonoma For 10th Straight Victory

POMONA – Led by the 13 kills from Daisy Duke, the 25th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team earned its second sweep of the weekend Saturday afternoon, knocking off visiting Sonoma State in three sets (25-15, 27-25, 25-13) at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.

The Broncos have won 10 straight matches, rising to 10-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in CCAA action. The Seawolves fell to 8-4 (1-3 CCAA).

CPP led from start to finish in the opening set, cruising to a 25-15 win, thanks to a blistering .467 hitting percentage and stout defense. The second frame was the closest-contested stanza of the afternoon, as it featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. Tied up at 19-19, the Broncos scored five of the next six points to capture a 24-20 lead. The Seawolves battled back to score five straight points to hold set point at 25-24, but a SSU service error, followed by kills from Duke gave CPP the thrilling 27-25 win and the 2-0 match lead.

The Broncos held on to the momentum from that point forward to score an easy 25-13 win in the third set to cap off the sweep.

Duke led all players with her 13 kills while Samantha Campion and Madison Novak each turned in a 10-kill effort. Caitie Mueller passed out 36 assists to set the offense. On the defensive side of the net, Avery Percival tallied a season-best 17 digs as Mackenzie Sullivan added 12. Kaitlan Tucker was a part of five blocks and Erin McFarland totaled four blocks.

As a team, CPP hit .343 while holding Sonoma to just .151. Kiana Richardson led the Seawolves with 12 kills.

Cal Poly Pomona will put its double-digit win streak on the line Friday when it travels to Cal State Dominguez Hills for a 5:00 pm first serve from the Torodome.
