SAN DIEGO -- Daisy Duke and
Madison Novak combined for 67 kills in two matches, propelling the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team to a come-from-behind five-set win in Friday's opener over Simon Fraser, followed by a three-set sweep of Concordia in the nightcap, highlighting the day's action at the Seaside Invitational, hosted by Point Loma.
With the two victories, the Broncos have won four straight to improve to 4-1 on the year.Â
Cal Poly Pomona 3, Simon Fraser 2 (24-26, 16-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-8)
The Broncos battled early in a see-saw affair with SFU, only to see CPP jump out to a 23-20 lead late in the opening frame. However, Simon Fraser roared back, scoring six of the next seven points to stun the Broncos 26-24 to win the first set. SFU used that momentum to take a 2-0 match lead after a convincing 25-16 win in the following stanza.
With the exception of a close fourth set, it was all Broncos the final three sets to earn the comeback victory in five. Novak went off for a career-best 21 kills while Duke enjoyed her best match of the early season, posting 17 kills with a .405 hitting percentage, not to mention seven assisted blocks on the other side of the net.
Samantha Campion contributed 12 digs and erred just once in 33 reception attempts. Defensively,
Erin McFarland had a career-high 10 assisted blocks, which is the third-most in CPP history since the current 25-point scoring system was instituted in 2008. The team, as a whole, recorded 34 assisted blocks, nearing the record of 40, set against UC San Diego back on Oct. 26, 2007.
CPP hit .216 on offense, holding SFU to just .189. Simon Fraser was led by the 16 kills of Brooke Dexter as the team from British Columbia fell to 3-4 this season.
Cal Poly Pomona 3, Concordia 0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-23)
Later in the evening, Duke continued to hit at a blazing clip, smashing 16 kills to the floor at a .500 clip to lead the Broncos to a three-set sweep over Concordia. She also added eight assisted blocks in the victory. Novak added 13 kills on offense as CPP hit .254 in the match.
Defensively, four Broncos registered double-digit digs, led by the 15 of
Mackenzie Sullivan and 13 from
Avery Percival.
Kaitlan Tucker was a big presence at the net once again, rejecting six attacks back at CUI.
Concordia (2-4) was led by Kirra Schulz, who had 12 kills.
Cal Poly Pomona wraps up its non-conference tournament schedule Saturday with a Noon showdown with host Point Loma in San Diego.
