No. 13 Broncos Score Fast to Top the Otters

POMONA – The No. 13 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos hosted their second CCAA match against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters. The Broncos were quick to score and were able to stay one step ahead to defeat the Otters, 3-2.

In the third minute, midfielder Harrison Cliff scored the first goal for CPP of an assist by forward Jerry Ramirez. Defender Fin Jackson scored his second goal of the season in the eighth minute from an assist by Melvyn Perez Cortez. Right after in the ninth minute, Forward Paul Roger Henschke found Ramirez who scored his second goal on the weekend, to take the Broncos 3-0 in the first 10 minutes of the match.

Although CPP was up, 3-0, CSUMB was not done playing as they scored a goal in the 19th minute and another in the 44th minute. Going into the second half the Broncos were up, 3-2. Both teams went through 45 minutes of exchange in the second half but neither team was able to score. CPP won their second CCAA match, 3-2, bringing their overall record to 6-1-2, and their CCAA record to 1-0-1.

Ramirez led the Broncos in shots as he took three shots on the game all of which were shots on goal. Midfielder Max Laguna attempted two shots and had one shot on goal. Henschke tallied two shots on the game.

"Today was a very good lesson to learn," said coach Matt O'Sullivan. "At moments we look unplayable, but soccer is a fragile sport and if you take your focus and desire away, the game and a good opposition will punish you. That is what CSUMB did, and it could have been worse, we got away with one today."

Coach O'Sullivan continued, "I hope our team learns from this moment and not to just go through the motions. We must have purpose and intent in every play. The second half we showed more maturity and professionalism, and we can at least end the game on a positive."

CPP's next match is Friday, September 30th against Chico State in Chico with kickoff set for 7:00 pm.

Bronco Bits: Cal Poly Pomona fourth-year head coach O'Sullivan moved to 30-11-9 in his coaching career … The Broncos are 19-2-4 in CCAA competition … CPP is now 12-3-2 against Cal State Monterey Bay … The most goal scored in the first 20 minutes was five against Humboldt State (Cal Poly Humboldt today) in 2011.
