Broncos Shutout Azusa Pacific, 3-0

POMONA – The No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos hosted the No. 20 Azusa Pacific Cougars for a NCAA Division II top 20 matchup. CPP was quick to establish the lead and their defense earned another shutout as they downed the Cougars, 3-0.

It was midfielder Woody Angell who found forward Kevin Hernandez for the first goal to take the lead against the Cougars in the 23rd minute.

Forward Mike Moser forced a penalty kick that was just off target when midfielder Max Laguna followed the miss with a goal of his own in the 30th minute to extend the lead, 2-0 heading into halftime.

In the 69th minute midfielder Melvyn Perez Cortez passed on the throw-in to midfielder Mikey Sedano who went for the header and scored the third and final goal for CPP. The Broncos overall record is now 4-0-1.

The Broncos attempted 19 shots against APU's 11 shots. Goalkeeper CJ Walker had three saves on the game. Moser led CPP in shots with five shots and one shot on goal. Forward Cris Prieto tallied three shots with one shot on goal and Paul Roger Henschke took two shots.

Once again, the Broncos defense in Cesar Ruvalcaba, Fin Jackson, and Jasper Winslow earned another shutout for CPP.

"The guys were superb this evening" said coach Matt O'Sullivan. "We were the better team and I actually thought they had a lot of quality in the game as well. We defended with intensity and showed good moments on the attack. It could have been more, and we need to learn to finish teams off earlier because they bounced back very well."

The Broncos last preseason match is Saturday, September 10th at Concordia with a 6:30 pm kickoff before the face Cal State LA to start CCAA conference competition.

Bronco Bits: Cal Poly Pomona fourth-year head coach O'Sullivan moved to 28-10-8 in his coaching career … The Broncos lead the overall series against the Azusa Pacific Cougars, 14-8-1.
