TURLOCK, Calif. – Trailing by two points with 4.1 seconds left in the contest,
Kalaya Buggs fires a 60-foot inbounds pass to
Chynna Cochran, who turned around to bank the game-winning three-pointer off the backboard to give the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team a thrilling victory over Stanislaus State in Turlock on Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos rise to 11-3 overall and 8-2 in the CCAA. The Warriors (4-12 overall) remain winless in conference play at 0-10.
Stanislaus State rallied from a 12-point deficit to take a 69-67 lead on a layup by Makayla Rose just before the Buggs-to-Cochran triumph on the other end of the floor, which sent the Bronco bench into a frenzied celebration. After a review, the officials moved the clock back to 0.9 left in regulation, but the Broncos defense didn't allow the Warriors to take a shot upon inbounding the ball, clinching the victory.
Ally Bates led the team with 15 points, all from beyond the three-point line.
Alicia Jones (13 points),
Breanne Ha (12 points),
Donja Payne (10 points) and Cochran (10 points) were also in double-figures on Saturday.
Rose poured in 38 points for the Warriors on 14 of 26 shooting, including 5 of 9 from three-point range on her own.
Cal Poly Pomona returns home on Thursday to host Cal Poly Humboldt at Kellogg Arena. Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm.
