POMONA – Breanne Ha scored a season-high 18 points and
Alicia Jones provided 11 points, but the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered a 68-65 loss at home to Sonoma State Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena.
The Broncos snap a four-game win streak, falling to 12-4 overall and 9-3 in the CCAA. The Seawolves rise to 9-9 (6-6 CCAA).
After leading for nearly 16 minutes in the first half, the Broncos surrendered a 13-1 run over a six-minute span in the third quarter and fell behind by 11 points at 54-43 at the 3:03 mark. The Seawolves pushed their lead to as much as 15 points at 63-38 with 8:12 left in the contest, but the Broncos rallied to score 17 of the next 21 points to get within two points at 67-65 with 18 seconds left to play.
With 16 seconds remaining, Sonoma's Kianna Maldia went to the free throw line and hit the first, missed the second, and CPP corralled the rebound, then called time out to set up a potential game-tying play. However, the Seawolves forced a turnover with nine seconds left and a quick CPP foul stopped the clock at seven seconds, putting SSU's Maldia back on the line. Maldia missed both, and on the ensuing rebound, the Broncos went the length of the floor, and Ha's three-pointer missed short as time ran out.
The two-hour, six-minute game featured 54 fouls, seeing three players (two Sonoma, one CPP) foul out. Ha's 18 points came on 6 of 15 shooting. Jones was 3 for 5 from the floor, and 5 for 7 from the stripe.
Reina Sausedo and
Kalaya Buggs each chipped in with eight points and
Sydney Fedinec added six. The Broncos were held to just 31.6 percent shooting on 18 of 57 from the hardwood.
For Sonoma State, Camille Johnson had a game-high 19 points and Alli McDonald recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The Seawolves connected on 42.6 percent of their shots (20 of 47).
Cal Poly Pomona will hit the road for the next four games, beginning at nationally-ranked Cal State San Marcos on Thursday at 5:30 pm.
