No. 7 Broncos and Cal State Dominguez Hills Split the Spoils in Carson, 2-2

CARSON, Calif. - Seventh-ranked Cal Poly Pomona twice took the lead and twice allowed an equalizer to settle for a 2-2 stalemate with Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's soccer rivalry matchup Sunday evening at the Dignity Health Sports Park complex.

With the tie, CPP moves to 7-1-4 overall and 3-1-2 in the CCAA. The Broncos finished the day the way they began, alone in fourth place in the conference standings. Reigning CCAA regular-season champion Cal State Dominguez Hills is an even 4-4-4 overall and 1-3-2 in league play.

The teams staged an active first half of an hour, combining for 12 shot attempts with four of them on frame. Eight belonged to CPP.

Just past that half-hour mark, at 31:25, CPP grabbed the lead as Mike Moser assisted Jakob Singh via corner kick for the latter's sixth goal of the season to move him back into a tie atop the squad scoring chart with senior All-American teammate Paul Roger Henschke. The Broncos' CCAA-leading 30th goal of 2023 meant a third assist for Moser.

The advantage lasted a mere 3:55, however, with the home side equalizing through senior Jhoel Sarraude at 35:20. Assists went to sophomores George Charles Jr. and Brandon Lee, their first and second, respectively. Sarraude is now tied with Lee for the Toros' goal-scoring lead at three apiece.

CPP notched the first three attempts of the second half, but Kevin Hernandez and Henschke both missed wide to the left, and Sam Lena's effort was blocked by a defender.

Cal Poly Pomona regained the edge at 64:02, courtesy of Henschke with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. Henschke thus went back in front of Singh with seven strikes. Sophomore center back Marcus Jorgensen picked up his first collegiate assist on the play.

The Broncos played the last 22:40 with a man advantage after Michael McKibbin drew a second yellow-card offense and thus an ejection.

Despite that, the hosts found a tying tally for the second time, at 82:53. Martin Velasquez was the scorer into the upper left with Logan Kaufman gaining credit for his third assist. It was Velasquez's second goal.

A final effort by Jorgensen in the 86th minute was turned away by CSUDH goalkeeper Arturo Magaña. The Broncos held narrow edges of 17-16 in shots and 4-3 in corner kicks on the night.

CJ Walker made his first start of the season in the CPP goal after replacing Luke Garciduenas in the 15th minute of Thursday night's showdown with Cal State LA. He notched his first save of 2023. Fellow senior Magaña collected a season-high-tying five saves in the Toro net.

The Broncos next head to Northern California for the second time in 2023 to conclude a second three-match road stretch. They are at San Francisco State (3-7-2, 1-4-1 CCAA) on Friday afternoon, Oct. 20, with kickoff at Cox Stadium slated for 3 p.m.
