SAN MARCOS, CA – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team dropped their match against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday afternoon, falling to 14-4 on the season. This loss came just one day after their 3-0 sweep over the Cougars in Kellogg Arena, resulting in a 1-1 series split on the weekend.
The No. 20 ranked Broncos now sit in third place in the CCAA standings with a 7-3 conference record, behind only #23 Cal State LA (9-1) and #11 Cal State San Bernardino (8-2). The Golden Eagles' only conference loss this season came to the Broncos on September 22
nd, when CPP swept CSULA at home in three sets. CSULA has since won seven consecutive matches while the Yotes from CSUSB have won five in a row.
Senior
Daisy Duke put up her second consecutive 20-kill game against the Cougars, finishing the weekend with 43 kills and 49.5 points. Duke's 1,102 career kills ranks seventh all-time in school history, and with 17 more kills will pass both Kellie Francis (2002-05) and Kimberly Van Beek (2000-03) to move into fifth place on the all-time kill list. Her 1,268.0 career points also ranks ninth in program history.
Senior middle blocker
Kaitlan Tucker racked up a season-high 12 kills, her most in a match since 2021 and the second-most of her career. Tucker also led the team with four block assists, tied with freshman
Alexia Athans.
The Broncos recorded a season-high 11 service aces, three coming from libero
Avery Percival. The junior out of Riverside, CA also led the team with 20 digs across the five sets, while
Caitie Mueller,
Samantha Campion, and
Emily Payne also each recorded double-digit digs. In total, the Broncos' 82 digs are their second-most in a match this season.
Mueller capped off an impressive weekend with 45 assists in the match, giving her 91 in the two matches against CSUSM. The San Clemente, CA native ranks second in the CCAA in assists per set at 10.50 on the season.
After taking the first set 25-15, the Broncos dropped both the second and third sets by scores of 25-15 and 26-24. They rebounded in the fourth set with a 25-16 win, forcing a decisive fifth set. Neither team wavered in the final set, as the Cougars' largest lead never exceeded three points. CSUSM would hang on to that lead for a 15-13 win, handing the nationally-ranked Broncos their fourth loss of the season.
