POMONA, CA – The Broncos picked up their 10
th consecutive victory at home on Friday afternoon, improving to 15-4 on the season and 8-3 in CCAA play. Cal Poly Pomona remains at third place in the CCAA standings, behind No. 23 Cal State LA (10-1) and No. 11 Cal State San Bernardino (9-2).
For the first time since September 9
th, the Broncos lost a set at home. In the five home matches that have taken place since then, CPP has collected five consecutive sweeps - outscoring opponents 15-0. After cruising to two wins in the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-16, respectively, the Broncos fell just shy of extending their sweep streak to six matches - dropping the third set by a score of 23-25.
After being down 17-24 in the third set, CPP collected six consecutive points off three Humboldt attack errors to bring the set within one. However, the Jacks hung on for the final point to avoid the sweep and win their first set. Including Friday's match and dating back to their match against Azusa Pacific on September 9
th, the Broncos won 20 consecutive sets at home.
Middle blockers
Kaitlan Tucker and
Alexia Athans came up big at the net, each collecting five total blocks. Tucker's 56th career block solo ties Heather Mathews (1990-93) for ninth-most in program history. Junior setter
Caitie Mueller collected her fourth consecutive game with 40 or more assists, and the ninth time she has done so this season.
The trio of
Samantha Campion,
Daisy Duke, and
Madison Novak each collected double-digit kills and double-digit points once again. All three rank top 10 in the CCAA in both kills and kills per set, as well as each being in the top 100 in the country in kills per set. The trio has combined for 662 kills on the season, which alone is more than 34 schools in all of NCAA Division II.
