No. 22 Broncos Charge Through NorCal With Back-To-Back Sweeps

TURLOCK, CA – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team picked up their 11th and 12th sweeps of the season on Friday and Saturday, improving to 17-5 on the season and 10-4 in CCAA play. The Broncos remain tied for third place in the conference with San Francisco State, behind Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State LA - each of whom owned a 11-2 conference record but face each other on Saturday night.

"I think we got back on track this weekend and we know what we want moving forward," said head coach Traci Dahl. "We explored some different lineups that will add to our depth for the remainder of the season."

CPP 3, CHICO 0
The Broncos were on a six-game win streak against Chico State entering Friday, including six sweeps, dating back to 2018. Their 3-0 win on Friday night added to that total for their seventh straight win against the Wildcats and their 11th sweep of the 2023 season, inching them closer to the school record of 14 in a season (2005, 2018, and 2021).

The 3-13 Wildcats struggled to keep up with the nationally-ranked Broncos, as CPP won all three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-17. The Broncos only trailed at the beginning of the third set, but an eight-point run would quickly turn that around and give CPP a six-point lead. Outside of that one stretch, the Broncos maintained a comfortable lead in each set to cruise to their second 3-0 victory against Chico State this season.

The team swung a collective .378 with a mere four attack errors. That is the team's second-fewest errors in a match in the past decade. Their fewest attack errors came last season, also against Chico State, when they had just one attack error in 64 total attempts. Their .656 attack percentage that game ranked fifth-highest in a single match in NCAA Division II history.

Junior Madison Novak was the lone Bronco to record double-digit kills with 12, the 14th time she has done so in a match this season. Samantha Campion (9), Daisy Duke (8), Caitie Mueller (5), and Kaitlan Tucker (5) recorded a majority of the remaining kills, collectively owning a .462 attack percentage. Mueller tied her season high by going perfect with five kills on five attempts, while also recording 29 assists. Her 802 assists on the season ranks second in the CCAA and 42nd in all of NCAA Division II.

Alexia Athans recorded a block solo in the match, her team-leading ninth of the season as a true freshman. Together, Athans and Tucker lead the team at the net - each having over 60.0 total blocks. Duke is close behind with 51.0 over own, while all three average over 0.8 blocks per set on the season.

CPP 3, STAN 0
Just as they did on Friday night, the Broncos won in convincing fashion with a sweep over Stanislaus State in Turlock on Saturday afternoon. That was the Broncos' 12th sweep of the season, making up 12 of their 17 wins. With the win against Stanislaus State, CPP ensures they will finish with a win percentage above .600, their third straight season doing so under Traci Dahl and the 23rd time doing so in the program's 43-year history.

The Broncos beat the Warriors in every facet of the game, leading in kills, aces, blocks, assists, and digs. Stanislaus State's .066 attack percentage was their third-worst of the season, allowing the Broncos to capitalize on multiple mistakes. CPP's .214 attack percentage is the Bronco's lowest this season while still resulting in a win.

Senior Kaitlan Tucker collected her 57th career block solo, placing her in sole possession of ninth on the all-time list. That is the most of any Cal Poly Pomona player since the current 25-point scoring format started in 2008.

Setter Caitie Mueller racked up 31 assists, bringing her season total to 771 – which is the ninth-most in a season since 2008. Mueller now has 1,411 assists in just two seasons with the Broncos. Should she continue with her career 10.45 assist-per-set pace, which would rank second in CPP history if she meets the minimum threshold, Mueller will find herself in the Top 10 in career assists by the middle of next season.

After trading blows early in the first set, the Broncos gained late separation to win the first set by a score of 25-19. A similar pattern took place in the second, where the Warriors were able to keep it close with the score at 12-10 through the first half of the set. CPP gained some critical separation thanks to three kills by Novak and two attack errors by Stanislaus to make the score 20-14. Kills by Campion, Mueller, and finally Novak would put a bow on set two, giving the Broncos a 25-20 win.

The third set proved to be more challenging for the Green & Gold, as the Warriors held a 16-13 lead. Three more kills by Novak would bring the Broncos within two at 20-18. After trading punches to make the score 23-21 in favor of Stanislaus, CPP rattled off four consecutive points – including three consecutive clutch kills by Campion - to claim the sweep.
