Broncos Clinch CCAA Tournament Berth With Sweep in Carson

CARSON, CA – For the third consecutive season, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team will be headed to the postseason. After sweeping the Toros 3-0 on Friday night, CPP secured a spot in the upcoming CCAA Tournament that will be hosted by Cal State LA from November 16-18th in Los Angeles, CA.

Last season, the Green & Gold swept the CCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed to claim their first-ever conference tournament title. In the eight years since the CCAA Volleyball Tournament began, the Broncos have made five appearances in 2015, 2018, 2021, 2022, and now 2023. They have reached the finals in three of those four trips, finishing runner-up in both 2018 and 2021 while winning it in 2022. This season, the Broncos look to defend their title.

The Broncos picked up their sixth consecutive victory against Cal State Dominguez Hills dating back to 2021, five of those wins coming via the sweep. In total, CPP has won 18-1 sets against the Toros in their last six matchups.

On Friday, Daisy Duke and Samantha Campion were ruthless on attack, each collecting 15 kills with near identical hitting percentages of .448 and .452, respectively. The team finished the night with an attack percentage of .349, their seventh-highest of the season. Senior Kaitlan Tucker finished the match with her third-most kills of the season at nine, while swinging a team-best .571. Tucker also led the team with three blocks assists, the fourth time she has done so in her last five games.

Caitie Mueller recorded a double-double with 46 assists and 15 digs. The San Clemente native has recorded 40 or more assists in 11 games this season while this was just her third time reaching 15 digs in a match this season. Her 46 assists also ties her most in a three-set match this season.

Freshman Alexia Athans recorded a career-high six kills in the win. The middle blocker from Chino Hills also picked up a block solo and two block assists, improving her team-leading block total to 68.0 on the season. That total ranks eighth in the CCAA this season.

Up Next
The Broncos will play an important match at Cal State LA tomorrow, November 4th, at 5:00 PM. Both teams have already clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament, with the Golden Eagles sitting one game ahead of the Broncos in the conference standings. If CPP wins, they will be tied with CSULA for second place with the same conference record, while holding the tie breaker over LA having two wins against them this season. So, a win tomorrow could go a long way in both CCAA Tournament seeding and in bolstering CPP's resume for the NCAA Tournament later this month.
