CHICO, CA – The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team opened the season in Chico, CA on Friday night, falling to Seattle Pacific in the opening game of the CCAA/PacWest/GNAC Challenge. The Broncos have now faced the Falcons in four straight seasons as part of the crossover challenge, holding a 3-1 record in those four matchups.
Bam Johnson and newcomer
Brandon Porter led the Green & Gold in scoring, each with double digit points at 14 and 13, respectively. Porter led the offense in shooting going 6-for-13 from the field and making the team's only three of the game. Junior
Jaden Winfield led CPP in rebounding, grabbing three offensive and five defensive boards. Johnson and
Malcolm Bell also contributed five rebounds a piece.
The team struggled to find their shot beyond the arc, shooting just 1-for-15 on three-point attempts. After shooting 25 percent from the floor in the first half, the Broncos turned it around in the second half by sinking 58 percent of their shots.
This improvement in shooting contributed to their second half scoring burst, where they looked to erase a 15-point deficit with 17 minutes to go in the game. A pair of free throws by Johnson and two baskets by Porter brought the deficit to just five points with 13 minutes to go.
For an abnormal three-minute period in the game, the score stood still at 44-39 in favor of the Falcons with neither team being able to make a basket, including four shots taken by CPP and three from SPU. Finally with five minutes to go in the game, a layup by Johnson brought the game within one, all but erasing the 15-point deficit that existed at the start of the half.
The Falcons would hang on to the lead in the final few minutes, picking up their first win against the Broncos since 2013, when they ended CPP's 28-3 season in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.
