Porter Scores Career-High in Loss to Cougars

CHICO, CABrandon Porter led the Broncos with 22 points on Saturday night, doing everything in his power to help the Broncos take down the Azusa Pacific Cougars, who had received votes in the pre-season Top 25 poll. With the 57-67 loss, CPP falls to 0-2 to open the season.

Porter went 7-for-12 (.583) from the field, including three treys. He is currently averaging an impressive 17.5 points per game to open the season while totaling eight rebounds and three steals. Last season at Cal Poly Humboldt, the Virginia Beach native averaged 7.3 points per game with 4.3 rebounds. Saturday night was the first time Porter has scored 20 or more points in a game in his collegiate career.

Sophomore Bam Johnson followed up his 14 point performance against the Falcons with 15 against APU, averaging 14.5 between the two games. Johnson went 6-for-13 from the floor while hitting his first three of the season.

Michael Ofoegbu was the third Bronco to crack double-digit points in Chico, scoring 12 while also leading the team with three offensive and seven total rebounds in the game.

The team shot 40 percent from both the floor and beyond the arc, a vast improvement in the latter from the night before.

After scoring the first basket of the game, APU took the lead and never let go. Despite trailing nearly the entire game, the Broncos kept the game within reach, maintaining less than 10 points of separation through the first half and most of the second. With seven minutes to go in the game, the Cougars were able to pull ahead by 15, their largest lead of the game. Back-to-back layups by Porter with two minutes to go would bring the game back within 10, but it was too late for the Broncos to piece together a comeback.

The Broncos are now 29-19 all-time against the Cougars, but have lost five of their past six matchups dating back to 2016. APU has been a perennial regional threat, accumulating a winning record in every season since 2013-14 - excluding an abbreviated 2020-21 COVID season.
