Strong Second Half Isn’t Enough at Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – After scoring a career-high 22 points last week against Azusa Pacific, Brandon Porter continued to tear through PacWest competition with a new career-high 26 points on Saturday. The senior transfer from Cal Poly Humboldt went 8-for-15 from the field with two treys, while also going 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. Porter leads the entire CCAA in points per game at 20.3, while also ranking third in the conference in total points scored with 61 to start the season.

Bam Johnson and Michael Ofoegbu were also key contributors, each scoring double-digits for the second straight game. Johnson has shown impressive consistency to open the season, shooting over 40 percent and scoring 14, 15, and 15 points in his first three games. Ofoegbu, on the other hand, has been impressive down low, grabbing a team-leading 18 rebounds. The trio of Porter, Johnson, and Ofoegbu currently accounts for 75 percent of the Broncos' points scored this season, each averaging over 10 points per game.

Cal Poly Pomona struggled to find their shot against Biola in the opening half, shooting 35 percent from the floor and 28 percent from three. The first half remained close until the final minutes. With 3:18 on the clock, Porter converted an and-one to make the score 34-30 in favor of the Eagles. However, four made baskets by Biola in the final minutes would put them up 43-31 headed into half.

The Broncos flipped a switch during halftime, shooting 55 percent from the field in the second half – their best in a half this season. After facing a 12-point deficit to open the second, CPP was able to bring the score within three with 10 minutes to go. Johnson came up big for the Broncos, scoring all 15 of his points in the second half to keep the game within reach. With three minutes to go, Biola began to pull away – ultimately hanging on for the 81-74 win.

Malachi Murrell and Jaden Winfield each grabbed six rebounds while combining for 15 points.
