No. 22 Broncos Fall to Golden Eagles in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team took a tough loss on Saturday night, falling to Cal State LA in four sets. With the loss, the Broncos are now 18-6 on the season and 11-5 in CCAA play. More importantly, CSULA (13-3) gained crucial separation from CPP in the CCAA standings, all but locking up second place behind Cal State San Bernardino (14-2). The Broncos are now in a three-way tie for third place with San Francisco State and Sonoma State, each of whom are 1-0 against CPP this season.

The Broncos already secured a spot in the CCAA Tournament with their win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night, so every game moving forward only affects their tournament seeding, and their resume for the NCAA Tournament. The CCAA Tournament will be hosted by Cal State LA from November 16th-18th in Los Angeles, CA.

Despite sweeping CSULA earlier in the season, the Golden Eagles got the best of the Broncos in a close match on Saturday night. The first set featured exciting back-and-forth play, with CPP gaining a lead as high as seven, twice. With the score at 18-11, the Golden Eagles were able to collect six consecutive points to bring the set within reach. Later, the Broncos looked to close the set with a 23-21 lead, but an attack error and service error would help give CSULA a late 24-23 lead. Back-to-back kills by All-American Emily Elliot would then give the Golden Eagles a 27-25 first set win.

Two more close sets ensued in the second and third, the Broncos winning the prior 25-23 and the Golden Eagles winning the latter 25-21. In the fourth, neither team held a lead of more than four points. With the Broncos one point away from forcing a fifth set, CSULA once again collected three straight kills to retake the lead. CSULA then closed the door with a 27-25 win, coming on an Elliot kill.

Senior Kaitlan Tucker recorded her third-most kills of the season with 10, swinging at a .500 clip. The Bakersfield native finished the weekend with 19 kills, .529 attack percentage, and eight total blocks. Daisy Duke led the team with 15 kills, her 16th time collecting double-digit kills this season. Duke finished the weekend with 30 kills, averaging 4.29 per set.

Junior Avery Percival recorded 20 digs in the match, the fourth time she has done so this season and all of which have come in the past month. Her 3.98 digs per set currently ranks fifth in the CCAA.
