Nationally-Ranked Wildcats Hold Off Broncos

CHICO, Calif. – The Broncos came up short to the No. 5 ranked Chico State Wildcats on Saturday night, losing by a score of 55-65. With the loss, CPP falls to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in CCAA play while tied for second place in the conference standings.

Just as they did in Thursday's win over Cal Poly Humboldt, the Broncos spread the ball around the court with 10 different players scoring at least a point. Bam Johnson was the only player to reach double figures with 11, and currently ranks second on the team this season with 71 points in six games.

Malcolm Bell and Michael Ofoegbu led the team down low with seven and six rebounds, respectively. The team as a whole outrebounded the Wildcats 35 to 29, converting to 18 second chance points throughout the game. The Broncos also outscored Chico State 28-20 on points inside the paint.

The difference came down to missed shooting opportunities. The Broncos were just 2-for-17 (.118) beyond the arc on Saturday, while the Wildcats shot 46 percent from three-point range. CPP currently ranks last in the CCAA this season in three-point percentage at .256, the only team below the .300 mark.

Despite struggling to make baskets, the Broncos were neck and neck with Chico State in the first half, going into the break down by just one point at 28-29. The Broncos retook the lead early in the second half on a three-point play by Jaden Winfield, bringing the score to 34-31 in favor of the Green & Gold. This would be CPP's last lead of the game as Chico State would go on a 19-5 run over the next five minutes of play to gain a double-digit lead. The two teams would trade baskets over the final 10 minutes, ending with a final score of 55-65.
