Johnson Scores Career-High 29 Points Against Gators

POMONA, Calif.Bam Johnson delivered the best performance of his career on Thursday night, scoring 29 points with five assists and going 12-for-17 (.706) from the field. In his 33 career games played with the Broncos, Johnson has reached double figures 14 times, yet had never surpassed the 20-point mark until facing the Gators. The Carson native now leads the team in scoring on the season with an even 100 points, ranking 10th in the CCAA.

The Broncos got out to a slow start, trailing 15-9 after the first six minutes of play. All nine points came from Johnson - having made three layups, a jumper, and a free throw. With seven minutes to go in the first half, yet another layup by the sophomore in the paint would keep the game within five, making the score 26-21. Through the Broncos' first 21 points, Johnson was responsible for 15 of them. CPP would hold SF State under 40 going into halftime, ending the first half at 39-32.

Coming out of half, Caleb Nelson and Johnson combined for 15 points in the first five minutes to bring the score back within six. However, this would not last long as the Gators would go on a 12-3 run to take a commanding 65-50 lead. Nelson would finish the game with a team-leading three treys and second with 13 points, his first time reaching double figures this season. Chris Gayles Jr. also reached double figures with 11 of his own – the first time he has done so this year as well.

The Broncos made things interesting in the final minutes, the biggest moment coming from a Nelson three in the corner to bring the game within seven with three minutes to go. However, the Gators responded in the final minutes to maintain a double-digit lead, ultimately securing their fifth win of the season.
