POMONA – Rhys Stevens and
Caleb Reyes again made quick work of their opponent, combining on a two-hit shutout while striking out 18 batters, as the No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team earned a quick 1-0 victory over Colorado School of Mines Friday night at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The Broncos remain perfect on the season at 5-0. It was the Orediggers' season opener.
Stevens (five innings) allowed two hits and Reyes (four innings) allowed one. Stevens (improving to 2-0 this season) walked two batters and struck out 10 while Reyes had no walks and struck out eight. No Colorado School of Mines runner ever got beyond second base in the ballgame.
Meanwhile, what ended up being the game-winning run for the Broncos came in the bottom of the second inning.
Marco Malerba led off with a single to right, advanced to second when
Jacob Lopez was hit by the pitch, moved to third on a double play off the bat of
Jordan Ku, then scored on an infield single by
Johnny Pappas. That's all the Broncos would need, but that's all they would get as Oredigger pitchers Luke Folsom and Blake Ripp gave up just five hits and two walks in eight innings.
Brent Cota,
Tyler Chaffee and
Trent MacKinney had the other three hits for CPP in the victory.
Cal Poly Pomona and Colorado School of Mines will play a doubleheader Saturday at Scolinos Field in Pomona beginning at 2:00 pm.
IMPORTANT TIME CHANGE FOR SUNDAY! Please note that the fourth and final game of the series between CPP and Colorado School of Mines on Sunday will now begin at 11:00 am, not 12:00 pm as originally scheduled.
