No. 21 Broncos Walkoff Twice To Remain Perfect

POMONA – Nin Burns II and Johnny Pappas each supplied the 21st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team with walkoff thrillers, highlighting a pair of one-run victories for the Broncos over visiting Colorado School of Mines (4-3 in 11 innings of game one, and 5-4 in game two) in doubleheader action on Saturday at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

The Broncos remain perfect on the season at 7-0 while the Orediggers fall to 0-3.

Marco Malerba, Trent MacKinney and Brent Cota all pounded out four hits, combining for 12 of the 21 CPP hits in the two games on Saturday. Eric Romo and Scott Armstrong each earned the victory on the mound in two innings of relief.

GAME 1: #21 Cal Poly Pomona 4, Colorado School of Mines 3 (11 innings)

The Orediggers drew first blood, tagging Edrian Rangel for three runs in the third inning on a RBI single by Adam Houghtaling and a two-run double by Garret Nielsen. The Broncos got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Cota brought home MacKinney on an infield single.

It would remain 3-1 in favor of the visitors until the bottom of the ninth inning. Tyler Chaffee got hit by the first pitch of the inning, then MacKinney and Nin Burns II followed with singles to load the bases with one out. Cota grounded out, but scored Chaffee in the process to get CPP within a run at 3-2 with two outs. Then, two pitches later, Mines pitcher Marcus Lee was called for a balk, allowing MacKinney to score and tie the game at 3-3 before Lee got out of the inning, stranding the winning run on third.

In the 11th, Chaffee led off with a single, moving to second on a groundout by Dylan Long. After MacKinney struckout, Burns II delivered the game-winner, a single to right field allowing Chaffee to score from second base for the 4-3 triumph.

Burns, Malerba and MacKinney each had three hits in the first game, while Cota and Chaffee had two. Five different pitchers saw time on the mound for CPP, but it was Romo to toss two scoreless innings in the 10th and 11th, earning the win.

Game 2: #21 Cal Poly Pomona 5, Colorado School of Mines 4

The Broncos didn't waste anytime getting on the scoreboard in game two as Malerba scored Burns II on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. In the fourth, Malerba smashed his first home run of the season, scoring Cedrick Perez, then MacKinney singled up the middle to score Pappas for a 4-0 lead.

The Orediggers plated two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. In the seventh, Cota doubled to lead off the inning, then moved to third on a passed ball. Mines reliever Weston Siefken struckout two batters while Cota loomed on third. Pappas came up and hit a chopper off to the left of the mound, Siefken ran to his right, picked up the ball, planted his foot, threw the ball towards first but forced first baseman Houghtaling to jump in the air, and Pappas was able to beat the throw allowing Cota to score the game-winner.
