#21 Broncos Fall In Series Finale To Orediggers

POMONA – The 21st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team fell behind early and couldn't rally late in falling 7-4 to visiting Colorado School of Mines in the final game of a four-game series on Sunday at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

The Broncos suffer their first loss of the season, going to 7-1. The Orediggers, meanwhile, win their first game of the 2023 campaign, leaving California with a 1-3 record.

Colorado School of Mines plated two runs in the first and two more in the third off of CPP starter Elias Jauregui (0-1), who lasted just three innings on the mound. Dylan Esquival came on for the next two innings and gave up another pair of runs in the sixth as the visitors took a 6-0 lead.

CPP's bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth when Malerba hit a grounder to first base with the bases loaded, but Mines decided to try to get the force out at home and the throw was errant, allowing Bobby Hook and Luke Watson to score on the play. Jacob Lopez then came up and delivered a sacrifice fly to score Jordan Ku, cutting the deficit in half at 6-3.

In the sixth, Darius Price lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Dylan Long to make it 6-4, but that would be the final run CPP would score the rest of the day. Mines added an insurance run in the seventh to account for the 7-4 final in favor of the visitors.

Hook and Long both recorded triples in the contest and Lopez was 2 for 4 with a RBI.

For Mines, Tyler Nielsen led the way, going 3 for 5 with three doubles and three RBI.

Cal Poly Pomona will take the next eight days off from competition before heading to Biola on Feb. 21 for a single game at 1:00 pm. The Broncos will then return home a couple days later to open CCAA play against Sonoma State.
