ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Three Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball players scored in double figures, including
Kalaya Buggs who recorded a double-double with 10 assists, but the Broncos suffered a 69-62 loss to host Sonoma State Thursday night at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.
The Broncos fall to 14-9 overall and into a tie for fifth place with the Seawolves (14-11 overall) at 11-8 in CCAA action. With three games to play in the regular season, CPP has a two-game lead on Cal State East Bay. Therefore, the Broncos will need to win at least one of their last three games and the Pioneers will have to lose one of their last three games in order for CPP to clinch a spot in the CCAA Tournament in two weeks.
Sonoma led for most of the contest, though the two teams battled through five ties and 11 lead changes. The largest lead for the Broncos came at the 5:38 mark of the third period when CPP led 35-33 after a made three-pointer by
Breanne Ha. The teams went back and forth until SSU pulled away late for the victory.
Both Buggs and
Ally Bates led the way with 11 points and
Chynna Cochran came off the bench to provide a spark and 10 points on 5 of 9 shooting in 23 minutes of action.
Sonoma State was led by the 17 points of Cielo Gonzalez, who was one of three players for the Seawolves who also scored in double-figures.
Cal Poly Pomona will play its final regular season away game Saturday when it makes the 5-hour trip north to Cal Poly Humboldt for a 5:30 pm tipoff in Lumberjack Arena.
