Broncos Clinch CCAA Tourney Berth With Win At Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. – With a dominating 71-53 win over Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday night in Arcata, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team has qualified for the 2023 CCAA Tournament for the 14th time in the last 15 seasons!

The Broncos, improving to 15-9 overall and 12-8 in conference play, got career-highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds from Kalaya Buggs in defeating the Lumberjacks, who fell to 9-15 overall and 7-13 in the CCAA.

Buggs' career night saw 14 of her 28 points scored from the free throw line, connecting on all but one attempt from the stripe, which is tied for the sixth-most made free throws in game in program history. Her 12 rebounds were also a personal best to go along with six assists in the victory. Alicia Jones also contributed a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ally Bates turned in a 12-point effort, while Ciara James and Breanne Ha each chipped in with eight points as all five starters provided all 71 points for CPP.

CPP scored the first eight points of the contest and held Humboldt scoreless until the 3-minute mark of the first period. In fact, the Lumberjacks missed their first 13 shots, including nine 3-point attempts, before connecting on a long ball by Kaz Parks. The Broncos' lead would remain at double-digits for most of the contest before CPP's advantage ballooned to as much as 19 points late in regulation.

Devon Lewis led Humboldt with 14 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks, and Madison Parry was held to 12 points, well below her season-average.

Cal Poly Pomona will return home for its final two home games of the season next weekend, hosting Stanislaus State on Thursday at 5:30 pm before wrapping up the regular season against Chico State on Senior Day Saturday at 1:00 pm.

While the Broncos have clinched a spot in the six-team CCAA Tournament on March 2-4 in Turlock, their seed has yet to be determined, but can be anywhere between No. 4 and No. 6 when all is said and done. Cal State Dominguez Hills clinched the No. 1 seed by winning the regular season and Cal State San Marcos will be the No. 2 seed. Both the Toros and Cougars will have the first round bye.
