No. 25 Broncos Sweep Otters In Saturday Doubleheader

POMONA – After a thrilling extra-inning walkoff win in the series opener, the No. 25 ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team cruised to a convincing victory in the nightcap, sweeping Cal State Monterey Bay on a wet and rainy Saturday at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

The Broncos improve to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA. The Otters fall to 9-8 (7-3 CCAA).

The first game was a classic pitcher's duel as neither team scored a run until the 13th inning. Between CPP starter Rhys Stevens and CSUMB starter Ryan Platero, the two combined to allow just five hits and five walks, striking out eight in 15 innings between the two. While Platero went seven innings and allowed just two hits, Stevens worked eight innings and gave up just three hits.

The first nine innings took just one hour, 52 minutes to complete, but five more innings would add up the time. In the top of the 13th, the Otters' Drew Williams broke through with a solo home run to right center field to give the visitors the 1-0 lead. The Broncos answered right back in the bottom of the 13th on a RBI groundout by Ben Lee. With two outs in the 13th, CPP had the game-winning run on third, but CSUMB got Trent MacKinney to fly out to end the threat.

In the 14th, Scott Armstrong, in his third inning of work, allowed two Otter runners aboard, but got out of the jam unscathed. In the CPP half of the frame, Brent Cota led off the inning getting hit by the pitch, then Marco Malerba doubled putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. Tyler Chaffee was intentionally walked to load the bases, and that's when Johnny Pappas lifted the walkoff sacrifice fly to win.

The teams combined just 10 hits in the contest. Malerba had two of them for CPP.

In the nightcap, the Broncos struck first with a pair of runs in the second. The Otters countered with a run in the third, but that's all Caleb Reyes and Dylan Esquival would allow the rest of the way. CPP continued to plate insurance runs, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Reyes, in earning his second win of the season, went seven strong innings, giving up just two hits, striking out seven. Esquival worked the final two innings, didn't allow a base runner, and struck out three. MacKinney, Pappas, Lee and Cedrick Perez all had two hits for CPP in the win.

SCHEDULE UPDATE FOR SUNDAY! The doubleheader between CPP and CSUMB on Sunday to wrap up the four-game series will begin at 12:00 pm.
