No. 28 Broncos Fall In Series Opener At Chico

CHICO, Calif. – Marco Malerba and Nin Burns II each hit home runs and Johnny Pappas went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, but the No. 28 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team dropped a 10-7 setback to host Chico State Friday night in the first game of a four-game series at Nettleton Stadium in Chico this weekend.

The Broncos fall to 13-6 overall and 5-4 in the CCAA. The Wildcats improve to 8-6 (3-2 CCAA).

It was CPP to reach the scoreboard first when Pappas scored on a fielding error off the bat of Malerba in the top of the first inning. Chico State responded in its next at bat with a run to knot the game at one, then Burns II lifted a sacrifice fly in the top of the second to take back a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Chico State ignited its bats, plating four runs on a pair of home runs, then added three more in the third inning to take an 8-2 lead early.

Malerba connected on a three-run bomb in the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-5, but the Wildcats responded with two runs in the sixth for the 10-5 lead. Tyler Chaffee singled home Pappas in the seventh and Burns II hit a solo home run in the ninth, but that's all CPP would get as it took the three-run loss in the series opener.

Rhys Stevens (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and five walks, striking out three in 2.1 innings of work. Chico starter Ethan Lay (2-0) went 5 innings and gave up five runs on five hits.

Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State will resume the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
