CHICO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered a pair of losses in a doubleheader Saturday at Chico State, losing by scores of 7-5 and 5-2.
The Broncos (13-8 overall) have fallen to sixth place in the CCAA standings at 5-6. The Wildcats, meanwhile, improve to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in league play.
In the opener, Chico State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings before
Cedrick Perez got the Broncos on the board in the fourth with a RBI single to right, scoring
Johnny Pappas. The following inning,
Tyler Chaffee induced a bases-loaded walk to put CPP down by one, then Perez followed with a two-run single to give the Broncos a 4-3 lead. Another CPP run came home in the sixth when
Nin Burns II hit a solo home run, making it 5-3 in favor of the visitors.
However, Chico State rallied in the seventh, plating four runs and it would be the difference in the contest as the hosts won, 7-5.
Pappas,
Marco Malerba and Perez each had two hits, contributing 6 of the 8 hits by the Broncos in the ballgame.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats scored four runs through the first four innings and held the Broncos hitless until the fifth when Burns II reached on an infield single. A batter later,
Nick Lugo scored after he walked earlier in the inning. Another Bronco run came home in the sixth when Malerba went yard, but that would be all CPP would score the rest of the way. CPP registered just three hits in the game.
The fourth and final game of the four-game series between CPP and Chico State scheduled for Sunday has been rained out and will not be made up. The Broncos will be back in action Friday at home against CCAA leader and No. 5-ranked Cal State San Bernardino. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm.
