Broncos Walkoff Again To Salvage Sunday Split With #6 Yotes

POMONA – After suffering a narrow 2-0 loss in game one, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team bounced back to win 2-1, thanks to a walkoff RBI single by Nin Burns II in extra innings to salvage a doubleheader split on Sunday with sixth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

The Broncos move to 15-9 overall and 7-7 in the CCAA. The Yotes go to 20-6 (11-5 CCAA).

In the opener, the CSUSB pitching staff of Josh Sandoval, Benny Olguin and Oscar Rauda combined to allow just three CPP hits, a season-low for the Broncos, and kept the CPP offense off the scoreboard. Burns II had two of the three hits while Johnny Pappas had the other.

Meanwhile, the Yotes, with nine hits in the contest, scored a run in the second off of Caleb Reyes and again in the seventh off of Andrew Campbell to account for the 2-0 win over the hosts.

In the nightcap, Burns II provided both RBI for the Broncos, the first coming in the bottom of the first when he singled home Trent MacKinney for the 1-0 lead. The Yotes got the run back in the third off of AJ Moreno when Garrett Macias brought home Riley Parker.

It wasn't until the ninth inning of the scheduled seven-inning affair that the Broncos were able to score the game-winner. Brent Cota led off the inning with a single, then advanced to second when Luke Watson walked. After a strikeout by Marco Malerba, Burns II delivered again, this time a chopper through the left side allowing Cota to score from second base.

Cota and Burns II each had two hits, combining for the only hits by CPP in the game. Scott Armstrong got the win in relief, going the last 3.1 innings, giving up just one hit.

The win was head coach Randy Betten's 200th victory at Scolinos Field.

Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino wrap up the four-game series in Pomona on Monday at Noon.
