POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team secured a series win over sixth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino with a 3-2 victory Monday afternoon at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The Broncos are now 16-9 overall and 8-7 in the CCAA. The Yotes fall to 20-7, 11-6 CCAA.
Noel Soto (1-2) tossed his best game of the season, going seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits, striking out four. The only inning he ran into trouble was the fourth inning when he gave up three singles, one of which brought home two runs.
Eric Romo came on in relief for the final two innings to pick up his first save of the year, giving up one hit to the seven batters he faced.
The Broncos offense took care of the rest, plating two runs in the second inning on RBI singles by
Marco Malerba and
Darius Price, scoring
Nin Burns II and
Cedrick Perez, respectively. Then, in a tie game at 2-2 in the seventh,
Brent Cota delivered the go-ahead RBI double, scoring Price before he was eventually thrown out at third trying to stretch his double to a triple.
CPP scattered 11 hits on the day, two apiece from
Trent MacKinney, Burns II and Price.
Cal Poly Pomona will hit the road next weekend to play four games at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Friday's first pitch is set for 3:00 pm in Carson.
