CARSON, Calif. – Johnny Pappas and
Tyler Chaffee both hit home runs, but the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning in losing 6-5 to Cal State Dominuguez Hills Friday to open up the four-game series in Carson.
The Broncos fall to 16-10 overall and 8-8 in the CCAA. The Toros rise to 14-11 (9-6 CCAA).
CPP didn't waste any time scoring runs against CSUDH as Pappas hit a two-run shot in the top of the first inning to put the Broncos on top 2-0.
Nin Burns II followed with a double, then two batters later,
Cedrick Perez brought Burns II home with a single to left for the 3-0 lead.
The Toros got two runs back in the bottom of the second, then took the 4-3 lead with two runs in the fifth inning. In the seventh,
Darius Price knocked a one-out double to left field, then came home to score on a
Brent Cota single to knot the game at 4-4.
In the ninth, Chaffee hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season to lead off the frame, giving the visitors a 5-4 edge.
However, in the bottom of the ninth, the Toros tied the game on a sacrifice fly, then scored the walkoff game-winner when Miguel Marin reached on a throwing error, allowing Caleb Ellis to score from third.
Cota led the way offensively for the Broncos, going 3 for 5.
Trent MacKinney added two hits, one of which was a double, and six others registered a base hit as well.
CPP starter
Rhys Stevens worked the first five innings, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out three.
Matt Orozco was tagged with the loss as he tossed the final 1.2 innings.
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills continue the four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader in Carson beginning at Noon.
