Broncos Drop Series Opener To Cal State LA

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered a 15-8 loss to visiting Cal State LA in the series opener Thursday evening at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

The Broncos fall to 18-12 overall and 10-10 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles rise to 12-16 (7-12 CCAA).

CSULA only scored runs in three different innings, but when they did, they came in bunches. Both teams traded runs in the first two innings as CPP would lead 2-1 through three. That's when the Golden Eagles put up five runs in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.

The Broncos would slowly chip away at the deficit, only to tie it up in the eighth at 6-6. In the top of the ninth, CSULA plated nine runs on eight hits to pull away. CPP got two runs back in the bottom of the frame, but it wouldn't be enough.

Both teams combined for 31 hits, 15 of them by the hosts. Johnny Pappas led the way with three hits, including a run-scoring triple in the first. Marco Malerba was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI while Trent MacKinney, Cedrick Perez and Darius Price each had two hits apiece.

Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State LA return to Scolinos Field Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
