No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona Men's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw with Biola in 2023 Opener

POMONA - The 22nd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team opened its 2023 campaign with a scoreless non-conference draw against visiting Biola University on Thursday night at Kellogg Stadium.

CPP (0-0-1), the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) preseason favorite, thus moves to 1-2-1 in season lid-lifters under fifth-year head coach Matt O'Sullivan, and 1-2-1 in home openers. Biola (0-0-1) is favored for third in the 11-team Pacific West Conference.

True junior Luke Garciduenas drew the start in goal for the Broncos, and did not have to make a save in earning his second collegiate shutout, as the stout defense in front of him did not allow a shot on goal by the Eagles. All six of their attempts were off target, while CPP totaled 11 shots, two of which were on frame. Junior CPP midfielder Mike Moser led all players with four shots credited off the bench.

Mauro Rafael, a transfer from CCAA rival Cal State San Marcos, made his CPP debut as a starter after missing all of 2022, while true freshman Lake Forest native Rocco Bon made his collegiate debut, also in the starting 11. Christian Bru earned his first collegiate start, while Josue Varela, a first-year Division I transfer from 2022 The Big West double champion UC Riverside, was on the pitch as well at the opening whistle.

Dutch goalie Gijs van Schouten, a Division I transfer from Milwaukee, made a pair of stops to notch a clean sheet in his Biola debut.

CPP earned 15 corner kicks to just two by the Eagles, but were unable to capitalize on any of them and settled for the tie result.

Cal Poly Pomona welcomes in another PacWest foe in Point Loma (0-1) this Saturday night, Sept. 2. Kickoff under the Kellogg Stadium lights is slated for 7 p.m. The Sea Lions are second in their league's preseason poll, and dropped a 4-2 decision in their opener earlier Thursday at Cal State San Bernardino.
