POMONA - The No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team surrendered an early goal, only to roar back for four straight scores on the proper net en route to a thrilling 5-3 win over visiting Point Loma on Saturday night at Kellogg Stadium.
With the victory, CPP improves to 1-0-1 on the year, while Point Loma drops to 0-2.
The Broncos fell victim to an unfortunate seventh-minute own goal, but just 68 seconds later, equalized through
Melvin Leon with
Paul Roger Henschke assisting the junior's first collegiate tally.
The score remained tied at 1-1 at the halftime break, before CPP struck for three goals in quick succession to break things open. The run came within a span of just 7:52.
Mads Frederiksen grabbed the go-ahead marker at 49:59 for his first collegiate goal, Henschke again providing the setup.
Sam Lena doubled the advantage at 53:55, this time with Frederiksen turning provider. Frederiksen then punctuated the flurry and completed his brace at 57:51, with Henschke assisting once more. That second one by the sophomore Danish product would prove to go down as the game-winner.
Point Loma got first goals as Sea Lions by Juan Salazar from the penalty spot in the 67th minute and Zachary Mercieca in the 88th, around Henschke's first of the season in the 69th. Leon had the helper.
Frederiksen and Henschke combined for three goals and four assists on the night. The latter Bronco's three assists were a single-game collegiate high. The native of Berlin, Germany, now has 20 goals and 51 total points for his career, moving into a share of ninth all-time in program history in both categories. Henschke's three assists also fall one shy of Cyro Oliveira's single-game CPP mark, with six other instances of a three-assist haul in the program annals.
Luke Garciduenas started in goal for CPP for the second straight game, but had to leave just over eight minutes in, giving way for Cal State Bakersfield transfer
Sucre Herrera to make his Bronco debut.
In addition to the eight goals, the teams combined for 11 yellow-card cautions, with eight of them going to the visitors. The final shot tally for such a high-scoring affair was just 8-5 in favor of the home side.
Cal Poly Pomona next awaits a showdown of nationally-ranked opponents as the 22nd-rated Broncos take on No. 21 Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., this Friday, Sept. 8, at 5 p.m. PT. CPP will round out its two-game Colorado trip two days later at Denver's Regis.
