HONOLULU – No. 23-ranked Cal Poly Pomona grabbed two three-set sweeps on the second day of the Hawai'i Challenge Friday. The Broncos opened with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-13) victory over West Virginia State and followed with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-16) over Hawai'i Hilo, their third-straight sweep.
The Broncos improve to 3-0 on the year with the pair of wins.
In the first match of the day, CPP boasted a .440 hitting clip as a team with two Broncos leading the charge.
Samantha Campion posted 13 kills, while Mariah Duke chipped in 12 kills. Caitlin Mueller drove the offense and racked up 26 assists.
Defensively,
Jenna O'Shea led the Broncos with eight digs, followed by
Madison Novak with seven.
CPP opened with a strong first set, hitting .538 as a team and holding the Yellow Jackets to just a .080 hitting percentage. It set the tone for the rest of the match as CPP powered through to the three-set sweep.
In the nightcap, the Vulcans put up a fight in the opening set but the Broncos quickly found their footing and grabbed the second set quickly. CPP kept momentum rolling and picked up its ninth-straight set win with a 25-16 third-set victory.
Duke led the Broncos with 14 kills on 27 attempts, committing just one error for a .481 hitting percentage, and added four blocks. Novak chipped in eight kills, while Mueller posted 33 assists and 11 digs in the match and Campion added 10 digs.
CPP closes out the Challenge on Saturday, taking on Chaminade at 5 p.m.
