No. 20 Broncos Open CCAA Action Victorious

SEASIDE, Calif. – No. 20-ranked Cal Poly Pomona opened CCAA action Friday night on the road at Cal State Monterey Bay and despite a shaky second set, powered through to a 3-1 victory (25-21, 16-25, 25-14, 25-16).

The Broncos improve to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in conference with their fifth-straight win, while the Otters slip to 3-5 on the year, 0-1 in the CCAA.

Three Broncos finished the night with double-digit kills, with another just on the cusp. Samantha Campion posted a match-high 18 kills, while Madison Novak added 12 kills and Kaitlan Tucker chipped in another 11 kills. Sarah Ybarra finished with nine kills and Caitie Mueller dished out 42 assists.

Defensively, Avery Percival led CPP with 17 digs, while Campion added 13 digs.

Tied 8-8 in the first, Novak sparked a 4-0 spurt to put the Broncos in control. Alexia Athans helped fuel the run with a kill and a combo block with Campion.

The Otters tried to keep things close and pulled within two, 19-17, but Campion sealed the first-set victory with a kill off a Mueller lob.

CSUMB evened things up with a powerful second set, holding the Broncos to a negative hitting percentage.

CPP snapped out of it in the third, however, and hit at an impressive .577 clip to take back control of the match.

The Broncos carried that momentum into the fourth and built up an eight-point lead, 22-14. Ybarra had two kills and an assist in a 4-0 run to help the visitors build up the cushion, before a Tucker kill sealed the set and match win for the Broncos.

CPP turns right around to take on Cal State East Bay on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
